The service station attendant assured me I was buying daisies – however my husband has informed me they are chrysanthemums – he comforted me with ‘it was the thought that counts’.
This book about Daisy Bates reminds me a little of the book ‘The Amazing Mrs Livesey’ I reviewed a couple of months ago; women of that era often reinvented themselves to get ahead in life or to give them autonomy or power to make change or educate others. Daisy Bates rewrites her history from being a penniless orphan to an heiress. Interesting reading about her marriage/relationship with ‘Breaker Morant’.
I really admired her love and zest for life, although her gender at times worked against her, Daisy’s determination and dedication ensured Aboriginal culture was recognised and documented.
